Migraine sufferers can get some relief with fingertip massage.
Millions around the world suffer from migraine headaches and in some cases it can be so severe that they may even need a trip to an emergency room for some relief. In some cases, just laying down may help, while other times some kind of medication may be recommended. Another effective alternative treatment is to apply some pressure with your fingertips on some pressure points on the body to reduce tension and affect the blood flow.
Inside Ends of Eyebrows
Use your fingertips of middle or index fingers, and apply firm pressure immediately at the inside end of each of your eyebrow. It’s important to apply firm pressure to these areas, and your fingers should always move in circular motion, “as if you’re trying to squeeze something right into a mortar. However, be warned that pressing and then holding for long can even induce a spasm. Massage this way for about 50 seconds.
Pressure point therapy at the temples is very effective in reducing migraine incidents. You can use your thumb to gently press your temples on both sides of your head. Use just a light pressure. The main purpose of this massage is to somehow relax the migraine sufferer. You can do this massage on yourself or the patient for 30-50 seconds.
Above the Forehead
Another pressure point can be found by drawing an imaginary line immediately from the outer sides of your head and then moving your fingers up until you find the points that are more sensitive than all areas around them. Once you find those points, you can use your fingertips to massage these areas for 20-50 seconds. You can find another pressure point in the same general area but right in the middle of your head.
You may be amazed to know that there are headache pressure points on your hands, too. They lie in the fleshy areas between your thumb and forefinger. Use a mild, circular motion on this area. However, be warned that these points may not be good if you’re pregnant. Sometimes hand massage can also induce labor.
Base of the Skull
Another easily accessible pressure point for instant headache relief can be found at the base of the skull. Pressure should be applied to the points where base of the skull meets your neck. These areas feel like small indentations, are about 2 inches apart. Put firm pressure on these areas for two to three minutes to release pain-killing endorphins.
